In Lithuania, 7 universities and 7 colleges offer study programs related to life sciences, more than 15,000 researchers implement life sciences projects in the private sector and research institutions. Members of the Lithuanian Association of Biotechnologists – scientific institutions – prepare life sciences, medical technologies, bioeconomy and other higher and higher education programs.

Vilnius University (VU) comprises twelve faculties, seven institutes, two university hospitals, four interfaculty centers of study and research, the oldest library in Lithuania (founded in 1570) with a modern Science Communication and Information Center, the Astronomical Observatory, the Botanical Garden, and the Church of St. Johns. Vilnius University is proud of the variety of research and study fields available there. The University implements study programmes in all study cycles: bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral. Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) is one of the largest technical universities in the Baltic States and one of the most prominent high education schools in the country, with a leading position in many research fields. The University provides studies of engineering, technologies, physical and social sciences, humanities and arts. There are 5 breakthrough areas of research and innovation, namely: health technologies, digital transformation and smart environment, new materials for industry and medicine, food technologies, innovation management. The Faculty of Natural Sciences has modern and constantly renewed studying facilities which have been kept up-to-date by courtesy of the EU structural funds for the last couple of years. Students can undertake research not only in the modern labs at VMU, but in the research centres of other Lithuanian scientific and educational institutions as well. Lithuanian University of Health Sciences (LSMU) is one of the largest universities specialising in life sciences in Europe and the largest institution of higher education for biomedical sciences in Lithuania, successfully integrating studies, research, and clinical practice.

There are two LSMU affiliated hospitals Kauno klinikos and regional Kaunas hospital, which ensure conditions for training top-level scientists and academics to carry out research and development, cooperate with businesses and the public sector, and implement innovations within clinical practice. Both hospitals serve students of Medicine, Odontology, and Nursing, offering a broad spectrum of practical knowledge and skills. Pharmacy students gain practical skills at the University’s Pharmacy; Veterinary students develop their clinical skills at the large and small animal clinics. Physiotherapy and Occupational therapy students receive practical skills at Kulautuva Hospital of Rehabilitation and Palanga Clinic of the Institute of Neuroscience.

The University is a member of various international organisations, such as the AAHCI, EUA, ASPHER, AMSE, AMEE, EAEVE and World Health Organisation, etc. LSMU actively cooperates with Japanese research and study institutions; long-term cooperation with strategic partners from Kazakhstan, Moldova, Ukraine, and Tajikistan continues. LSMU is an active participant in the Erasmus+ exchange program. Students can study at foreign universities or go abroad for practice for a period of up to one year. Most mobility programme partners are in Germany, Spain, France, Finland, and other EU Member States.

Seven faculties at the LSMU offer a variety of study programmes and degrees covering all three cycles of the University education. More than 1600 full-time foreign students from 87 countries (mainly from Sweden, Israel, Germany, Spain, United Kingdom, Lebanon, India, Nigeria, etc.) are currently enrolled here. They comprise 25 % of the student body at LSMU. The study programmes meet university education standards applied in EU countries, and the LSMU diploma is internationally recognised in Europe, USA, Israel, and other countries.

Klaipėda University (KU) is located in a geographical area unique from the economic, cultural, and geopolitical aspects, i.e. on the Lithuanian seaside, boasting the only port of Lithuania. The University was founded in 1991 to meet the needs relevant to the development of the country: to deal with regional problems in the areas of culture, education, science, industry, technology, and economy, to contribute to decentralization of higher education, to attract youth to Klaipėda, to reinforce the humanities in Klaipėda and Western Lithuania, to conduct research in the culture and history of Western Lithuania and the neighbouring Baltic States, to create a regional cultural centre in Klaipėda, and to foster the idea of Lithuania as a maritime state. Marine Research Institute of Klaipeda University (KU MRI) is the only institute in Lithuania that unites leading experts and state-of-the-art facilities devoted for marine research, technology development and innovation. It has a multidisciplinary experience and capacity in environmental research, including environmental genetics, aquatic biogeochemistry, aquatic resources, fishery and aquaculture, ecosystem management, preparation and implementation of environmental monitoring programs, spatial planning, environmental impact assessment, integrated coastal zone management, preparation of nature management plans and environmental education activities. In addition, KU MRI aims to facilitate science, study and business cooperation, based on high-level scientific knowledge and the up-to-date open access research infrastructure.

Lithuanian Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry (LAMMC) – an innovative Centre of in agricultural, forestry and food sciences, which consists of 3 institutes, 5 regional branches and 3 open research centres located in different parts of Lithuania.

LAMMC, together with Vytautas Magnus University, conducts doctoral studies in the fields of agricultural and nature sciences: plant genetics, crop breeding, soil quality, crop pathology and protection, plant biopotential, horticulture, forestry, biochemistry and other. In Lithuania, LAMMC is the leading institutions according to the internationalization level of doctoral studies.

LAMMC conducts fundamental and applied research and has a strong relationship with public and private economic entities. Each year, the revenue from such research is from one quarter to one-third of the Centre’s total incomes.
